Dr. Hafiz Bin-Salih, the Upper East Regional Minister, has pledged the state’s support for large-scale mining companies operating in the region.
He, on the same score issued a stern warning against illegal mining in the upper east region.
Despite recent geological surveys revealing significant gold deposits, the government will not tolerate illegal mining activities.
The minister emphasized that legitimate mining concession holders will receive support, while illegal miners will be prevented from operating.
“We will not allow illegal miners to stand in the way of people who have legitimately been given concession,” the Minister warned in a radio interview.
He expressed optimism about the mining sector’s potential to drive regional development, but stressed the need for effective regulations to ensure responsible mineral exploitation stressing that “It is these giant mining firms that can come here, help in the development of the Upper East Region.”
Dr. Bin-Salih believes that large-scale mining companies can bring substantial revenue and development to the region, citing pledges from existing mining companies to construct an airport and undertake other developmental projects.
He encouraged small-scale miners to legitimize their activities by following due process and obtaining necessary documentation from the Minerals Commission.
“If they follow the processes and Minerals Commission gives them the needed documentation, we will allow them to operate,” he assured.
