The Public Relations Officer of Earl International Group Gold GH Limited, Albert Azongo, has raised serious safety concerns about illegal miners destroying underground support pillars within the company’s concession in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.
Speaking on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast Today Show, Mr. Azongo said the support pillars are critical structures underground that hold the ground in place, and even when there is gold around them, they are not supposed to be touched.
He said some illegal miners who find themselves in those areas wrongly assume that the company does not need the gold around the pillars, and go ahead to blast or chisel them out, not knowing the grave danger they are creating.
“Illegal miners tamper with our underground support pillars. There are support pillars underground, even if there is gold around the pillars, they are not supposed to mine. If you go ahead and destroy the pillar because of gold, you are weakening the ground,” he said.
“The more they do that, the more they are weakening the pillars,” Mr. Azongo warned.
He said the continuous destruction of these pillars is gradually weakening the ground, posing a serious risk of collapse that could endanger the lives of workers and anyone else underground.
Mr. Azongo called for urgent intervention to stop illegal miners from further damaging the company’s underground structures.
