In a quest to make a positive impact and stimulate the learning abilities of students and pupils in the Upper East Region, Gavin Zeyu Wei, a financial and management professional and teacher, held valuable learning sessions with pupils of Gbane Community School Complex in the Talensi District and the Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
The outreach program was facilitated and supported by Earl International Group Gold Ghana Ltd, where a total cash donation of GHC 15,000 was made to both schools to support the purchase of teaching materials.
Gavin, a management member of Earl International, noted that his strong desire to impact knowledge and distill complex concepts into accessible knowledge inspired him, through the support of the Earl Group, to embark on the outreach program.
“To me, it is very important to share the knowledge that I have learned in school and also contribute that to the students here,” he said.
Holding a Master of Science in Finance (STEM) from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University, Gavin has established himself as a distinguished figure in financial analysis, investment banking, and corporate finance.
As a Teaching Assistant at the University of Southern California and Boston University, he has developed innovative curriculum materials, facilitated engaging lectures, and provided individualized support to students.
TEACHING SESSION
On the morning of Thursday, June 20, 2024, Gavin held a Mathematics teaching session with pupils of Grade 5 at the Gbane Community School. The class session walked the pupils through solving complex basic mathematics questions in very simplified methods that are easily comprehensible.
The participation and attentiveness of the pupils throughout the session signaled an awesome experience of sitting in a classroom in a rural area but having the feel of teaching methods of schools in the Western world.
“When I see those young eyes looking at me, for me, it is just full of future. They are just only in grade 5 and about 10-year-old kids, and they have a whole bright future ahead of them. So, I believe that by building that foundation of Mathematics skills and by focusing also on other subjects, it opens a world of possibilities where they can continue to improve their skills in various aspects but at the same time being able to go to a very good middle school,” Gavin said.
THE SUPPORT
Having appreciated the infrastructural and logistical challenges that confront students of the school, Gavin made a donation of GHC 5,000 to support the school’s ability to purchase teaching and learning materials to improve their teaching outcomes.
He notes that “The reason why I supported the school is that while growing up in Canada and the US, I saw that normal or basic schools are very well built. On coming here in Ghana, I saw that there are a lot of kids who have a lot of potentials, but the infrastructure of the school doesn’t really allow them to unleash their full potentials. Even though I could not donate a lot, but at least in my ability, I’m able to donate GHC 5,000 to help them have better markers, better boards, and better notebooks to help them have a better environment to achieve what they are capable of”.
